Ahead of South Africa’s 2024 National Elections, voters faced an overwhelming number of political parties and, for the first time, independent candidates. The only official source of information was a set of lengthy PDFs from the IEC which was impractical for most people to navigate. To bridge this gap, Open Cities Lab launched MyCandidate South Africa, an interactive, easy-to-use tool that organised complex electoral data into a simple, searchable platform. With over 14,000 users and thousands more engaging with educational resources, MyCandidate made electoral data transparent, usable, and empowering for South Africans at the polls.
